Ibiza's hippy markets: art, culture and unique shopping experiences

Ibiza is known for its breathtaking beaches, dreamy villages and picturesque landscapes. But in addition to its dreamlike backdrops, the island also has a lot to offer in terms of culture and art: Visitors can immerse themselves in the beginnings of the flower power movement of the 1960s and 1970s at Ibiza's many different hippy markets. During this time, numerous dropouts, artists and musicians from all over the world settled on the beautiful Balearic island. This can still be seen today in the colourful markets, where hundreds of creative minds and traders regularly offer their goods and products. But where can you find the most interesting hippy markets in Ibiza? In our article, our Engel & Völkers estate agents introduce you to the highlights of the island!

1. Get to know the original hippie culture: Punta Arabí

Es Canar in the east of Ibiza is not only a popular destination for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts: the beautiful holiday resort also serves as the backdrop for Punta Arabí, the largest and oldest hippie market on the island. Every Wednesday from May to October, you can experience the original hippie flair here - numerous stalls with handmade accessories, fashion and art are waiting to be discovered by you! At some stalls, you can even watch artisans making their creations. For a little refreshment or a local delicacy, the diverse selection of food trucks can be found throughout the market.

2. Mercadillo de Sant Jordi: a paradise for bargain hunters and collectors

The Mercadillo de Sant Jordi in the south of Ibiza is not a typical hippy market: special second-hand treasures such as antique furniture, books and clothing are sold here. As you can find the most unusual pieces here, this flea market is particularly popular with local Ibizans. The San Jordi hippy market takes place on Saturdays all year round - if you come at lunchtime, you can listen to the bongo players who set the mood on the steps of the former racecourse!

The inhabitants of Ibiza appreciate the Mediterranean island for its diverse cultural offerings, which not only consist of social events, lively parties and interesting exhibitions, but also feature regular events such as the lively hippy markets - the varied organisation of everyday life and leisure time are part of the typical Ibizan attitude to life.

3. Playa d'en Bossa: a hippy market for the whole family

The hippy market in Playa d'en Bossa in the south-west of Ibiza may be a little smaller, but visitors can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the busy beach here every day. Bathers like to visit the market for an extensive shopping spree or a cool drink in a relaxed atmosphere, while children love the musicians and comedians who provide entertainment and good humour with their performances.

4. San Juan: creative diversity in the north of Ibiza

The fabulous market of San Juan, located in the northern region of the island, is a must for any art lover: a variety of artists present their new works here. In addition to unusual sculptures and impressive paintings, you can also buy locally grown fruit and vegetables as well as handmade fashion and jewellery in San Juan. Your shopping experience should not be spoiled by hunger and thirst: In addition to numerous food stalls in the market square, San Juan is also home to a number of cosy restaurants and chic bars where you can enjoy delicious tapas or relax with a refreshing cocktail.

In addition to the diverse cultural offerings that you can benefit from when buying a home in Ibiza, the island also offers ideal conditions for outdoor activities. In our latest blog article, our Engel & Völkers estate agents in Ibiza give you some tips for your next run through the breathtaking island landscape!

5. Special entertainment programme: the Las Dalias hippy market

The Las Dalias hippy market is considered one of the original hippy markets on the island. Since it was founded in 1985, Las Dalias, which is located in the village of San Carlos and around five kilometres from Santa Eulalia, has become a legendary meeting place for artists and free spirits. The creative and unconventional atmosphere that makes Ibiza so unique can be clearly felt here. With over 200 stalls set up in Las Dalias every weekend, you are guaranteed to find everything you are looking for: From musical instruments and toys to rugs, hammocks, tea and spices from all over the world, there is something here for every need and taste. The special highlights of this authentic market include stalls where you can have your fortune told or treat yourself to a revitalising massage. Visit the Las Dalias hippy market to find unique items and recharge your batteries!
