Local celebrations throughout the year: These events await you on Ibiza
One of the most important arguments for buying a house or finca in Ibiza for many prospective buyers is the Balearic island's multifaceted culture, which is expressed in the form of numerous festivals and events. Throughout the year, you can take part in exuberant festivities that are deeply rooted in the local tradition of the population with a property in Ibiza. From the Fiesta de Maig to the Día Nacional and the authentic Ibizan Christmas traditions: Engel & Völkers Ibiza describes the festivities that await you in spring, summer, autumn and winter in Ibiza in the following blog article. We hope you enjoy reading it!
Spring on Ibiza: Experience a varied programme of festivities
Right at the beginning of the new year, in addition to Epifanía, the Epiphany, there is a central event in January: Sant Antoni, the festival in honour of Saint Anthony, which is celebrated on 16 and 17 January. Bonfires are lit all over the island on the evening of 16 January, dedicated to the patron saint of domestic animals and livestock. The following day, the blessing of St Anthony takes place, which is accompanied by joyful processions, dances and extensive festivities. Another highlight is the Ibizan carnival in mid-February: Imaginative costumes, delicious specialities and an exuberant atmosphere create unique moments year after year that you should not miss out on after buying your house or apartment in Ibiza.
When nature comes back to life on Ibiza and the temperatures get warmer, the calendar is filled with various holidays and events: It all starts on 19 March with the Fiesta de San Josep in the village of the same name - a patron saint's festival in honour of Saint Joseph, the highlight of which is usually an orchestral concert alongside colourful costumes and exhibitions. Depending on the calendar position of Easter, Semana Santa usually takes place at the end of March or beginning of April - the counterpart to Central European Holy Week and one of the most important Christian festivals in Ibiza, with magnificent processions to marvel at and traditional meals to enjoy.
On the first of May, the Fiesta del Trabajo (Labour Day) is also a public holiday, followed by the Fiesta de Maig in the village of Santa Eulalia on the first Sunday in May. This is a traditional spring festival where the streets are decorated in bright colours and flowers are scattered everywhere - a great experience for property buyers on Ibiza who want to enjoy the authentic community life on the island. Also worth a visit: Eivissa Medieval, a medieval festival in the historic centre of Ibiza Town that celebrates the long and eventful history of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historical music, classic Ibizan food and regional handicrafts make this event a real highlight of the local events calendar that you shouldn't miss, according to our team of estate agents!
Enjoy events and festivals in the Ibizan summer after buying a property
The summer of events on Ibiza, which also includes a large number of famous parties in the clubs of the island's capital, traditionally begins with the Día de la Virgen del Carmen on 16 July. It is dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, the Virgin of Carmen, and is therefore primarily celebrated in the island's harbours. At the centre of the holiday is a solemn procession in which a statuette of the Virgin is placed on a decorated boat and then taken out to sea. The following August, there are three public holidays: Firstly, the Fiesta de Sant Ciriac on 8 August, when the reconquest of the Balearic Islands by the Kingdom of Spain from the Saracens in 1235 is commemorated in Ibiza Town - with majestic fireworks at the end! Shortly afterwards, on 15 August, La Asunción, or the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is celebrated, followed by the Día de Sant Bartomeu celebrations in the port of San Antonio de Portmany on 24 August. Finally, Día Nacional de Catalunya, which is also celebrated on the neighbouring islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera, marks the end of the summer holidays on Ibiza on 11 September, allowing you to take part in the island's cultural life after your property purchase.
From Spanish National Day to Epiphany: Ibiza's public holidays in autumn and winter
On the occasion of the discovery of America by the navigator Christopher Columbus, the Spanish National Day is celebrated on Ibiza on 12 October. In autumn, this is a reminder of the roots of the entire Spanish-speaking world and is therefore also celebrated on the mainland and in many Latin American countries. After the All Saints' Day on 1 November, which is called Día de Todos los Santos in Ibiza, the Dia de Sant Carles is celebrated on 4 November in the village of the same name - on this occasion, the organisers invite visitors to enjoy entertaining activities such as sports competitions, live music and the famous squid festival in the weeks beforehand, where everything revolves around catching, preparing and enjoying the Mediterranean edible fish.
As winter approaches in December, there are more traditional festivities on the programme at the end of the year: In addition to Constitution Day - Día de la Constitución - on 6 December and La Inmaculada Concepción on 8 December, the day of the Immaculate Conception, the focus is particularly on Christmas, which extends over Christmas Eve (Noche Buena) and Christmas Day (Nadal). In our recently published blog article on Christmas celebrations in Ibiza, you can find out which special rituals and customs make the festive season a very special experience there. You can also read about how Epiphany is celebrated in Ibiza, which is just as important here as Christmas itself.
As in many parts of the world, Ibiza rings in the New Year with Noche Vieja, the New Year's Eve celebration on 31 December, and Año Nuevo on 1 January with extensive parties and fireworks - perhaps you can make 2025 unforgettable by buying a house or apartment in Ibiza?
